Even with the rigid support of timber posts and balcony or narthex wall framing, a steeple will eventually lean if the endwall support is a nonyielding masonry wall. Many roof-mounted church steeples lean back toward the nave when support is shared between an endwall and a lessstiff roof truss. No matter what the configuration, wind and seismic forces should be applied in the transverse directions (across the ridge of the main structure) and in the longitudinal directions (parallel to the ridge). The engineering analysis of a steeple should consider wind pressure in four directions. A two-dimensional or plane frame analysis may be appropriate for other sorts of steeples. For these steeples a three-dimensional engineering analysis may be most appropriate. Some steeples comprise square, hexagonal or octagonal stages erected in telescoping fashion and surmounted by a spire, including between their stages transitional structures called crabs. Endwalls may be timber framed or masonry. In many cases, the two interior posts pass through a balcony structure. Many roof-mounted timber-framed steeples divide their bearing, with two posts on the endwall of the church and two posts on the first interior roof truss. Steeples may stand free on their own foundations or they may integrate into the endwall or sidewall framing of a larger structure, usually a church. THE stability of a steeple in the wind depends on its anchorage to the building’s foundations. Portico leaning toward Meeting Street was rebuilt and large cracks in first bay repaired. Charred tongue and groove exterior walls What We Love About the Havelock Community The exterior walls are sided with charred tongue and groove (Shou sugi ban style!) which is also treated with an oil finish to withstand harsh conditions. Continuous rib metal panels are each individually bent over the arched frame to provide the snow-shedding roof. He adds a WRB (weather resistant barrier) and tapes all of the seams before installing furring strips to which the siding and roofing are fastened. 2×4 framing is added to further stiffen the structure as well as provide cavities for the Havelock Wool batts. As you can see, he uses an Intello Plus vapor barrier taped with Tescon Vana. Michael builds his walls from the inside out which enables him to incorporate a fully-sealed envelope. Intello plus Havelock Wool A Very Tight, Insulated Wall Assembly Pine tongue and groove boards cover the oak frame. Oak dowels hold tight the frame with mortise and tenon and lapped dovetail joints. From there the frame is constructed with some timber frame joinery. They are then quickly removed from the box and carefully bent over a robust bending jig with an electric winch to help coerce the timber down. The oak timbers are cooked in a high-heat steam box for several hours. The arches and the frame of these cabins are made of locally sourced, solid white oak timbers. ![]() How he builds these unique cabins is inspiring to say the least. ![]() The structures are of a similar shape as the high-peaked gothic-arch New England boat sheds and they perform excellently under heavy snow loads making them ideal structures for any place where you get a lot of snow.
